Cal Poly SLO Beats Long Beach State
Mike Wozniak scored 31 points Thursday night and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo made 12 of 29 shots from three-point range in beating Long Beach State, 84-74, in San Luis Obispo.
Wozniak was six of 10 from beyond the three-point line and Ross Ketcham made three three-pointers after Long Beach State cut Cal Poly’s lead to 59-58 with a little over eight minutes remaining.
Ketcham and Chris Bjorklund added 13 points each for the Mustangs (10-11, 3-6 Big West Conference).
San Diego 78, Pepperdine 70--Pepperdine got caught with its guard down, losing the battle of the backcourts and a chance to make a move in the West Coast Conference.
With guards Gerald Brown and Jelani Gardner combining for only 16 points, the Waves lost to last-place San Diego before 2,117 at San Diego.
The Waves (13-8, 5-4 in the WCC) could have moved within half a game of first place with a victory. But with Brown and Gardner, the team’s leading scorers, having off nights, Pepperdine slipped to fourth.
Loyola Marymount 80, St. Mary’s 71--Leo Saucedo scored 17 points and Ben Ammerman added 16 as Loyola Marymount held off St. Mary’s in a West Coast Conference game in Moraga.
The Gaels got within 68-67 with 5:30 remaining, but Loyola Marymount (7-14, 3-6) went on a 12-4 run.
Peter Cornell, who had 14 points for Loyola Marymount, set a WCC record, hitting on 19 consecutive field goals over three games. The streak was stopped in the second half Thursday night.
