Brumm to Coach U.S. Junior National Team
Jim Brumm, the boys’ water polo coach at Foothill High, has been named coach of the U.S. Junior National water polo team.
Brumm replaces San Jose Bellarmine Prep Coach Larry Rogers. Brumm was Rogers’ assistant the last four years.
“I’m really looking forward to this,” Brumm said. “Since I first got the word, I’ve been busy organizing stuff and getting ready for the tryouts, the World Junior Championships and the Pan-American Junior Championships.”
Brumm, Foothill’s coach since 1987, led the Knights to the Southern Section Division I championship in 1995.
The Junior National team will be made up of players age 19 and younger. Tryouts are at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Newport Harbor High. A $25 fee is required.
Final selections for an A and B team will be after a tournament in May in Colorado Springs. Each team will carry 13 players.
The Southern California zone team will be coached by Capistrano Valley High’s Jason Lynch and Brian Kreutzkamp, an assistant at Newport Harbor. Brumm will oversee all nine zones in the United States.
The first major competition for the Junior National team will be in the Pan-American Games, July 19-26 in Havana, Cuba.
