Credit for Schools

There were two pieces of extremely good news in your Feb. 3 edition: a 44% drop in AIDS-related deaths in the U.S., and a 30-year low in California’s crime rate. Despite a thorough reading of the articles, I could find no credit given to public schools, which in the last 10 years have greatly intensified their programs on AIDS awareness, conflict resolution, drug abuse prevention and gang awareness.

Public education is routinely blamed for every problem that plagues our society. Has anyone considered the possibility that these success stories might at least in part be attributed to the efforts of our schools?
