Homeowners Offered Aid on Quake Safety
The city is offering grants of up to $5,000 to low-income homeowners seeking to make their homes sturdier for earthquakes.
Under the Seismic Retrofit Grant Program, the money is available for work that will brace home foundations, chimneys and water heaters.
Eligible homes must have been built before 1960, and the city must approve the contractors hired to do the work.
Repayment will be waived if the homeowner lives in the retrofitted property for at least three years after receiving the funds. Homeowners who sell their property or transfer title before three years will have to pay back a portion of the grant.
