Do as Clarke Says, Not as He Once Did
Bob Clarke, general manager of Canada’s men’s hockey team, has repeatedly condemned Gary Suter for cross-checking Paul Kariya and leaving Kariya with a concussion that forced him to withdraw from the Olympics.
He also decried what he believes to be a deliberate attempt by Suter to injure Kariya. Yet it was Clarke whose slash broke the leg of Valeri Kharlamov in the 1972 Summit Series between the Soviet Union and Canada.
Not surprisingly, he didn’t want to discuss it. “That was 30 years ago,” Clarke said. “I hardly remember it.”

For U.S. goaltender Guy Hebert, the Olympics are a reunion with his former coach, Ron Wilson, who was not rehired by the Mighty Ducks after last season. He’s enjoying the chance to play for Wilson again--maybe because he knows it’s for only a short time.
“It’s good. It’s different from Pierre [Page],” Hebert said. “It’s kind of strange, but you focus in on what you have to do.”
