Youth Club Receives 2nd Large Donation
The Oxnard Boys & Girls Club has received another big donation, this time receiving $300,000 from Haas Automation, a machine tool firm in town.
The donation puts the 45-year-old club’s current fund-raising drive at $1.1 million, officials said Monday.
Club directors want to build new headquarters near 5th Street and Ventura Road. They estimate the project’s cost at $2.1 million.
In addition to the money, Haas pledged to start a mentoring program aimed at providing job training to Oxnard-area youth, City Councilman Tom Holden said in a statement.
“This is a tremendous example of a company’s commitment and investment in the future of a community,” Holden said.
Longtime Oxnard real estate developer Martin V. “Bud” Smith recently gave the club $500,000. The club’s headquarters is now in La Colonia, and it has seven locations in all, including a center in Port Hueneme. It hosts sports, arts, crafts and other events for children and their families.
