Big Sky Again Recognizes Northridge’s Tolson, Criner

Sophomore Christina Tolson and junior Joe Criner of Cal State Northridge were selected Big Sky Conference track and field men’s and women’s athletes of the week.

Tolson was selected for the third consecutive time after raising her Northridge indoor record in the shotput to 52 feet 7 3/4 inches to win the Holiday Inn Invitational in Reno, Nev., on Saturday.

The mark is the second best on the conference’s all-time list and is only 2 1/4 inches shy of the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA indoor championships next month.

Criner was selected for the second time this season after clocking a school indoor record of 20.92 seconds in the 200 meters to tie for first place at Reno.

Criner’s performance automatically qualified him for the NCAA indoor championships. His previous school best was 21.01 on Jan. 31.

VOLLEYBALL

The Renegades, a girls’ club team made up of several athletes from the region, finished second among 268 teams in the 18-and-under division at the Las Vegas Invitational.

The Renegades lost to Orange County Nike in the championship match Monday night.

Team members are Brooke Rundle, Erika Denison, Megan Mullen and Heather Hutchison of Westlake; Sherisa Livingston, Courtney Guerra and Teresa Russell of Royal; Brooke Niles of Calabasas, Krystal McFarland of Buena and Lauren Killian of Marlborough.

Northridge middle blocker Adam Black has recovered from a case of full-body cramps and is expected to play tonight against UC Irvine in a men’s volleyball match.

Black, a sophomore, was hospitalized Friday with cramps after a five-game victory over Pacific.

SOCCER

Westlake High forward Megan Daly accepted a scholarship to play at San Francisco next season. Daly has scored 45 goals the past two seasons.

BASKETBALL

Buena High guard Renae Hofmann, who missed three games last week because of flu, is expected to play in the Bulldogs’ playoff opener against Canyon on Saturday.

Hofmann is the leading scorer for the Bulldogs, seeded No. 2 in the Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.
