Pool for College Park

Re “College Park’s Future Discussed by Officials,” Feb. 12.

Fifteen years ago Ventura County had a model of a proposed park it was going to build on vacant land at the corner of Highway 1 and Channel Islands Boulevard in southeast Oxnard. It was to be called College Park.

The model sat in the lobby of the Government Center. Since I was a county employee, I would walk by and admire the model of College Park. My park. I live within a block of the land. Over the years the county proposed several plans for the park on this land but they encountered roadblock after roadblock. Some of the roadblocks came from past Oxnard City Councils.

I am very happy that the county is moving forward with plans to improve the vacant College Park land with an Olympic-size swimming pool. And I wish to thank those who are responsible for this progress.

First I would like thank Supervisor Frank Schillo, who represents portions of south Oxnard and Port Hueneme. Supervisor Schillo came to the College Park neighborhood twice to discuss residents’ concerns. He walked the neighborhood with Martin Jones, chairman of the College Park neighborhood organization, and listened to us. We are very grateful.

I would also like to thank the many residents in the College Park neighborhood who have worked hard to see that College Park becomes the park we were always promised. You are too many to mention but special thanks to neighbors in Silverado Townhomes, Sunny Acres Mobile Home Park and our many friends in Oceanaire Mobile Home Park.

And last I would like to thank the most “super” of all the county supervisors, John Flynn. Thank you for meeting with neighborhood chairs Larry Stein, Dennis Ralph and Martin Jones to discuss development of College Park. Thank you, Supervisor Flynn, for keeping alive the county’s dream of a wonderful neighborhood park at College Park.
