Man Hit by Van Near Hospital Dies
OXNARD — A 72-year-old pedestrian who was hit by a minivan outside St. John’s Regional Medical Center has died, officials said Thursday.
Bernardino Villa Miguel of Oxnard was pronounced dead at 10:01 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s after emergency crews worked for more than three hours to try to save his life, said Ventura County Deputy Coroner James Baroni.
Miguel was attempting to cross North Rose Avenue near Socorro Way about 6:30 p.m. when a minivan driven by Ruth Mary Hartman , 54, of Oxnard slammed into him.
The impact sent Miguel into the windshield and then into the air before he landed on the pavement in front of the hospital’s south entrance. Hartman was not injured.
Miguel was jaywalking on Rose when he was struck, and there was no indication that alcohol was involved in the accident, police said. Police said no charges are expected to be filed against Hartman.
Investigators were unsure why Miguel was walking in the area. According to hospital spokeswoman Rita O’Connor , Miguel had not been a patient at St. John’s since December.
