Hubbard Too Tough for Cougars

Center Janae Hubbard was too much for Washington State to handle Friday night at Pauley Pavilion, scoring 26 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to lead UCLA to an 80-74 Pacific 10 Conference victory over the Cougars.

Hubbard, a sophomore, was helped by reserve guard Melanie Pearson, who scored 19 points. The victory improved the Bruins’ overall record to 17-7. They are 12-3 in Pac-10 play.

Poor shooting (38 %) and 14 turnovers contributed to UCLA trailing, 32-31, at halftime. But the Bruins shot 51.4% in the second half and took control with a 9-0 run to erase a 60-59 deficit. Pearson scored five of the points.

Also scoring in double figures for UCLA was forward Maylana Martin, who had 13 points. She has scored in double figures in 34 consecutive games.

Center Yvonne Kunze led Washington State (11-14, 5-11) with 25 points.

USC 65, No. 23 Washington 63--The Trojans, led by junior center Adrain Williams and junior guard Kristin Clark, upset the No. 23 Huskies at the Lyon Center.

Williams scored 20 points and Clark added 19, including two free throws with less than 10 seconds left, as USC (11-13, 6-9) beat a ranked opponent for the first time in two years.

For USC Coach Chris Gobrecht, it was her first victory against her former team. She coached the Huskies from 1986 to 1996.

Washington (17-8, 8-8) was led by forward Amber Hall, who scored 23 points, and center Jamie Redd, who had 21.
