Three’s Good Company in SuperSonics’ Victory
If the NBA kept track of consecutive three-point baskets made, the Seattle SuperSonics probably would have broken the record Sunday night at Vancouver, Canada.
The SuperSonics made their first 12 three-point attempts and finished 13 for 16 from behind the arc in a 120-108 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.
“It was just one of those nights,” Gary Payton said. “We’re not going to look back at this and say we’re a three-point shooting team, because we’re not. We’re a defensive team and that’s what we’re doing.”
That’s not to say Coach George Karl was totally satisfied with his team’s performance.
As he put it, he got “offensive” in ripping his team at the halftime break when Seattle gave up 65 points to trail, 65-56.
“I don’t think I can repeat what I told them,” Karl said. “I was highly offensive at halftime. I was embarrassed by 65 points. And they responded. They showed a lot of pride.”
Washington 109, Phoenix 99--Juwan Howard scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter for the Wizards at Washington.
The Suns, already playing without Danny Manning (abdominal strain) and Kevin Johnson (knee surgery), lost point guard Jason Kidd, who twisted a right ankle in the second quarter and didn’t return. X-rays were negative.
Sacramento 106, Charlotte 90--Mitch Richmond scored 11 of his 23 points in a lopsided first quarter and the Kings went on to lead by 30 in the second quarter at Sacramento.
Sacramento centers Michael Stewart and Olden Polynice dominated the middle, holding Hornet center Vlade Divac to two points.
