No One Hurt When Helicopter Tips Over in Landing at Oxnard Airport
OXNARD — A small helicopter was severely damaged but no one was injured when the craft ended up on its side Friday in a field at the Oxnard Airport, officials said.
The two-seater R-22 Robinson was on a training flight when it crashed near a runway about 4:20 p.m., according to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.
The accident occurred when the pilot tried to land and the helicopter toppled over onto its side, smashing the rotors, officials said.
Oxnard firefighters were called to the scene because the mishap created a small fuel spill--about 5 gallons--in the southwest corner of the airfield, said fire Capt. Chris Donabedian.
Crews were able to right the helicopter, which was then towed away, officials said.
The helicopter was being operated by a division of Channel Islands Aviation of Camarillo, authorities said. Channel Islands officials declined to comment on the crash.
The cause of accident was under investigation, the FAA spokesman said.
