Too Tenant-Friendly
In the June 21 “Rent Watch” column a resident apartment manager complains that his tenants don’t seem to accept his authority, a situation made more difficult by the fact that his children play with their children and his wife has become friendly with other wives in the building.
You don’t need much education or experience to know that “familiarity breeds contempt,” and this is precisely what his problem stems from.
The first rule in on-site management is never socialize with your tenants beyond what is necessary to effectuate a respectful and businesslike working relationship.
