* Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management, a known growth investor, said it hired value portfolio managers Edmund W. Keeley Jr., Philip J. Miller and Victor J. Raskin. The three, formerly of Travelers Group’s Smith Barney Capital Management unit, invest in companies they regard as undervalued based on market capitalization, level of yield, price-to-book ratio and other ratios. San Diego-based Nicholas-Applegate expects to launch a new value mutual fund based on this team’s work later this year.
* Los Angeles-based Smart & Final Inc. reported income for the second-quarter ended June 15 of $1.3 million, or 6 cents per diluted share, compared with net income of $6.8 million, or 30 cents, a year ago.
