UAW Official Sees GM Move as Positive

General Motors Corp. agreed to return disputed equipment to a strike-idled stamping plant, a move the United Auto Workers’ chief negotiator called “extremely positive.” The announcement came moments before the end of a closed hearing before an independent arbitrator to determine the legality of the strikes at the stamping plant in Flint, Mich., and at a nearby parts plant. The agreement to return the equipment stemmed from recent progress made in high-level talks to end the strikes. It also sent plant-level negotiations back into high gear. Talks at both plants went into the night.
