Pedestrian Hit and Killed on Freeway; DUI Suspect Arrested
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The California Highway Patrol arrested a suspected drunk driver who fatally struck a pedestrian on Interstate 5 early Saturday morning, according to a CHP dispatcher.
The driver and his passenger suffered injuries. The pedestrian died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday. No names have been released.
The pedestrian was walking in the carpool lane of the freeway near Junipero Serra Road when he was struck by a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta, the CHP dispatcher said. The Jetta was going 65 to 70 mph when the driver swerved left and hit the pedestrian with the right front of the car.
The impact lifted the man into the air and through the windshield. He collided with the Jetta’s front-seat passenger, who was knocked unconscious.
The pedestrian died at the scene, and emergency services took the passenger to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. The passenger later was released. The driver was arrested and was being held at county jail.
