Crossing the Line
A look at prominent players who have been on both sides of the Dodger-Giant rivalry.
* Dusty Baker--After hitting 144 homers for the Dodgers from 1977-83, he signed as a free agent with the Giants in 1984, playing one season for them and batting .292 in 100 games. He was named manager of the Giants before the 1993 season, and twice has won the league’s manager-of-the-year award, including last year when his Giants beat the Dodgers by two games.
* Brett Butler--Played three seasons with the Giants (1988-90), and is fifth on the San Francisco all-time list for stolen bases (125). Signed with the Dodgers, and in his first game back at Candlestick Park, hugged Tommy Lasorda on the field to show where his loyalties lay.
* Roger Craig--Pitched in three World Series for the Dodgers (1955,’ 56, ‘59) and managed the Giants in one World Series (1989).
* Juan Marichal--Third on the all-time Giant list in victories and had his number retired by club. Also, almost bashed in Dodger catcher John Roseboro’s skull with a bat after an on-field dispute. Ended his career in 1975 with Dodgers, going 0-1 with a 13.50 earned-run average in two games.
* Reggie Smith--Played for Dodgers from 1977-81 and was key member of 1977 and 1978 World Series teams, hitting 32 and 29 homers in those two seasons. Played his final season, 1982, with Giants, batting .284 with 18 homers. Played against the Dodgers in the final game of the ’82 season, during which Joe Morgan homered to deprive the Dodgers of a share of division title.
* Duke Snider--All-time Dodger home run leader (389) was with team from 1947-62 and had his uniform number retired in 1980. Spent his final season in majors, 1964, with Giants, batting .210 in 91 games.
* Ron Perranoski--Third all-time in saves with the Dodgers, played for team from 1961-67 and 1972 and was their pitching coach from 1981-94. Joined Giants in 1995 after tenure with Dodger organization ended.
* Jackie Robinson--Hall of Famer spent his entire career with Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-56). When the Dodgers traded him to the Giants after the 1956 season, Robinson retired rather than play for the Dodgers’ bitter rivals.
* Some others who have played for both teams--Jim Gott, Bill Madlock, Bill North, Candy Maldonado, Stan Javier, Jeffrey Leonard, Dick Dietz, Daryl Spencer, Gary Thomasson, Derrel Thomas, Alex Trevino, Hoyt Wilhelm, Jose Vizcaino, Cory Snyder, Terry Whitfield, Brad Wellman, Mike Vail, Darryl Strawberry, Ron Roenicke, Rick Parker, Jim Poole, Al Oliver, Darren Lewis, Manny Mota, Norm Larker, Tom Haller, Von Joshua, Len Gabrielson, Ed Goodson, Brad Gulden, Ivan DeJesus, Ron Davis, Enos Cabell, Gary Carter, Todd Benzinger, Doyle Alexander, Dave Anderson.
