Funds for Emergency Dredging of Channels OKd
The Army Corps of Engineers has approved $750,000 for the emergency dredging of channels blocking access to Marina del Rey harbor, officials announced.
The funding complements $500,000 allocated for dredging as part of the 1997 Energy and Water Appropriations Act, the law that funds Corps projects.
“The powerful storms of recent weeks have nearly closed both the northern and southern channel access to the Marina del Rey harbor,” said Rep. Jane Harman (D-Torrance).
Storm-generated sediment has repeatedly blocked the marina’s entrance channels and the corps is nearing completion a long-term study on how to clean out the channels.
Dredging could begin within a week, Harman’s office said.
