City Council Approves Shopping Center Plan
The Los Angeles City Council gave the owners of the Racquet Center in Studio City final zoning approval Tuesday for a shopping center project to replace the 22-year-old sports facility.
The developer has proposed building a 100,000-square-foot center--including a 55,000-square-foot Ralphs market, a drugstore and two restaurants--at Vineland Avenue and Ventura Boulevard.
As a condition of approval, the developers agreed to make improvements to the intersection so it can handle an expected increase in traffic.
The road improvements, estimated by the developers to cost $10,000, would involve modifications to Vineland to allow for a fourth southbound lane.
A consultant to the developers, Pauline Amond, said the $26-million project still faces permit reviews by the city’s Planning Department before construction can begin.
Some neighbors have expressed concerns about the project, but others have said they would welcome the grocery store.
