FORWARD Sharks, 7:30 tonight: Coach Darryl Sutter assures everyone that Todd Gill’s decision to give up his captaincy is not a controversy. “Todd made that decision and if it makes him more comfortable, then maybe it helps his play,” Sutter told the San Jose Mercury News. Gill had been a healthy scratch in four of six games.

Hurricanes, 5 p.m. Sunday: Carolina is putting all of its playoff hopes on goaltender Trevor Kidd, who helped ease Sean Burke out of the picture. “This is the time goalies have to step up. We didn’t play that well [last Monday in 3-1 victory over Sharks], and Trevor kept us in the game,” left wing Sami Kapanen said to the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer.

At Kings, 7:30 p.m. Monday: Defenseman Rob Blake credits a personal trainer, whom he hired during the off-season, for a conditioning program to keep healthy this season. “He’s kept me on a program, which has kept my strength up, and I think it’s been a key to why I haven’t been injured,” Blake told the Canadian Press. “In the past, my injuries were just a lack of being physically 100%.”

Maple Leafs, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: Leaf president Ken Dryden remains committed to seeking help from within before looking to make trades to help his team. “We’ve started [going to the farm team], promoting a player such as Daniil Markov,” Dryden told the Toronto Sun. “He’s not here just filling a sweater. Maybe these kinds of players can offer us a kick start.”
