Police to Spend More on Community Patrols
The Police Department soon will begin spending more than $120,000 on its community patrol programs.
The money will pay for 2,000 hours of bicycle patrol by regular and reserve officers, 1,000 hours of investigative work by a part-time civilian aide, bicycles, safety equipment and a truck for the radio and park ranger patrol programs, Police Chief Steven H. Staveley said.
Most of the money is from a U.S. Department of Justice grant; about $12,000 comes from city coffers.
City Council members this week called the action a good use of the funds.
The grant funds are expected to be available by May, city officials said.
