Minority Actresses to Lead CSUN Panel
Actresses Lisa Lord, Hattie Winston and Liz Torres will lead a panel at Cal State Northridge today titled “Creativity, Casting and Critics--Women of Color Confront Industry Images.”
Lord, who is part Chinese, is a cast member of the ABC soap opera “Port Charles” and has appeared in the television series “ER” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”
Wilson, an African American, had a role in the movie “Jackie Brown” and will be appearing in the upcoming Disney movie “Meet the Deedles.”
Torres, a Latina, was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in “The John Larroquette Show” in 1994 and 1995. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1995 for the NBC sitcom.
“Historically, strong roles for women have not been as plentiful as strong roles for men, and when you’re a woman of color, it becomes even more problematic,” said Elizabeth Say, chairwoman of the women’s studies department at CSUN, which is sponsoring the event.
The discussion will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre inside the Speech Drama Building on the south side of campus.
The moderator will be CSUN theater professor Lillian Lehman, herself a working actress.
The event is free and open to the public.
