1995 Newton Claret, Napa Valley (About $13)

This blend of Bordeaux grape varieties, from the makers of a very sought-after Merlot, has pretty fruit and a nice spicy or peppery character. Though smooth and easy to drink, it has more personality than most California Bordeaux blends in this price range.

It’s a great bottle to take to a casual dinner party. And the handsome packaging makes it look much more expensive than it is.
