Reduce, reuse and recycle. Those are the three Rs students countywide are learning as they make their way through a new interactive display at Rainbow Disposal in Huntington Beach.
“We hope that kids walk away from this display thinking that they can make a difference in reducing the amount of trash,” said Ron Shenkman, vice president of the disposal company.
The company worked with city leaders in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley to open “Planet MRF,” short for Material Recovery Facility. Organizers expect thousands of students from area districts for tours.
The display is built with 500 pounds of recycled materials, according to its creator, Rob Hardin, a Huntington Beach-based artist. “I wanted to make something that was child-friendly but could also be enjoyed by adults,” Hardin said.
The display is above the recycling center, where hundreds of employees sift through garbage to retrieve recyclable items.
