Crash Leaves Three With Minor Injuries

COSTA MESA — Three people escaped with minor injuries after the sport utility vehicle they were in collided with another car and rolled several times Thursday, police said.
Rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to pry the roof off the Ford Explorer and free two men and a woman trapped inside.
“They were very lucky,” Sgt. Martin Carver said. “They walked away with minor lacerations.”
The Explorer was traveling north on Newport Boulevard when it collided with a smaller car going east on Del Mar Avenue. Two people in the smaller car weren’t hurt.
Battalion Chief Christopher Riley, who was at the scene, said the fact that the people in the Explorer were wearing seat belts could have contributed to the lack of serious injuries. The air bags did not deploy, he said.
