FORWARD At Stars, 5:30 p.m. today: Defenseman Richard Matvichuk is coming through at a critical time for Dallas, which is playing without the injured Derian Hatcher, Sergei Zubov and Shawn Chambers. “In [Matvichuk’s] first two years, we saw some erratic jumps forward and slips backward that we see in most young players,” GM Bob Gainey told the Dallas Morning News. “In the last 18 months, he’s found his place here.”

Avalanche, 5 p.m. Sunday: Some observers in Denver believe Colorado Coach Marc Crawford misses former assistant Joel Quenneville, who left last season to take over the St. Louis Blues from Mike Keenan. But Quenneville isn’t so sure about that. “Well, they’re third overall right now, pretty near the top,” he told the Denver Post. “That’s not too bad.”

At Devils, 4:30 p.m. Wednesday: Doug Gilmour is undergoing ice and massage therapy after having 35% of the cartilage removed from his right knee in arthroscopic surgery. “It’s not a serious enough injury to have any effect on my contract [negotiations],” he told the Newark Star-Ledger. “The way I’m looking at it is I want to make sure my knee is 100% before I come back because of the postseason.”

At Flyers, 4:30 p.m. Thursday: No sign of major changes yet from new Coach Roger Neilson, who has former Flyer boss Wayne Cashman at his side as an assistant. “We’ll know more [about any changes] after we have a real practice,” John LeClair told the Philadelphia Daily News. “[Having Cashman around as an assistant coach now is] actually a lot less awkward than I thought it would be.”

QUOTE “He’s like [Bryan] Berard and [Brian] Leetch, so dangerous. He comes from anywhere with no fear factor. He’ll do a lot of things others won’t, and when he’s not going good he’ll turn your hair gray.”-- Colorado Coach Marc Crawford on Sandis Ozolinsh, his scoring threat on defense
