St. Louis Cardinal left-hander Donovan Osborne, out most of last year because of a torn groin muscle, probably will be sidelined for the start of this season because of the same injury.

General Manager Walt Jocketty said Osborne, 28, won’t throw for at least a week while he takes anti-inflammatory drugs.

Osborne, beginning the second season of a three-year, $12.75 million contract, had been scheduled to make his first start of the spring Sunday. He was 3-7 with a 4.93 earned-run average in 14 starts last year.

“We’re probably going to slow him down some just to be sure and be careful,” Manager Tony La Russa said. “He could still make it for opening day, but it’s going to be a push.”

Dave Stieb, who hasn’t pitched in the major leagues in nearly five years, is making a comeback at age 40 with his original team, the Toronto Blue Jays. . . . Philadelphia’s Curt Schilling, who led the majors with 319 strikeouts last season, argued in the dugout with Phillie pitching coach Galen Cisco on Wednesday after learning Garrett Stephenson was relieving him in the fourth inning. “We knew he’d be ticked off, but that’s him,” Manager Terry Francona said. “He wants to pitch nine innings all the time.” . . . Former Kansas City relief pitcher Dan Quisenberry, 44, has completed his scheduled 33 radiation treatments for a brain tumor, which was operated on in January.
