CSUN Offers Forum to Discuss Diversity

Diversity and cross-cultural relations will be discussed during Cal State Northridge’s fourth “Day of Dialogue” on Wednesday.

Sponsored by CSUN’s Project Community, the event has been held every semester since fall 1996 to provide a forum for open discussions about different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, said Kristin Morgan, coordinator of the day’s activities.

“We have been successful at providing an opportunity for folks who normally wouldn’t come together to discuss sensitive topics such as race and racism,” Morgan said. “In past events, people have said that they needed more time to discuss matters even after hours of dialogue, and if that’s a measure of success, we’ve been very successful.”

Morgan said the event is made possible by a $100,000 grant the university received in February from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to further the work of Project Community. The program is aimed at fostering understanding among the diverse ethnic groups on campus and the surrounding community.

The free public event will begin with registration and a welcoming ceremony at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union’s Grand Salon, on the east side of campus.

Participants will form smaller groups to discuss and exchange ideas and opinions. A wrap-up session will be at 3:30 p.m.

“Students and the greater community will gain a perspective as to how racism affects them and to appreciate other cultures, backgrounds and orientations,” Morgan said.
