Kim’s Party Seeks to Expand Amnesty

Reacting to criticism that last week’s amnesty was not enough, President Kim Dae Jung’s political party said it will ask the government to free more political prisoners May 3. Kim, a former prisoner of conscience himself, granted amnesty to 5.5 million people, from political prisoners to traffic violators. Of the more than 2,304 prison inmates freed, only 74 were classified as political prisoners.
