800 Treated After Pipe Leaks Ammonia

A pipeline carrying toxic gas burst in southern Mexico. Eight hundred people were treated for symptoms related to the leak, and 1,000 were evacuated, authorities said. The pipeline is owned by the government oil monopoly, Pemex, and carries ammonia, which is used to make fertilizer. The leak occurred near Cosoleacaque, about 300 miles southeast of Mexico City. It was unclear how many of the injuries were serious. In a statement, Pemex said it would begin to repair the pipeline today, when it is safe for workers to enter the area. It did not comment on the cause of the accident.
