Mentoring Program to Host Rites of Passage Ceremony
Teenshop Inc., a mentoring program that offers social, educational and cultural enrichment to girls ages 13-18, will host a rites of passage celebration Saturday, marking some members’ transition into adulthood.
During the ceremony, scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., the girls will sing, perform poetry and historical pieces and model African clothing of their own design. They will also hear words of support and encouragement from their elders.
“The elders, the grandmothers, aunts and sisters have to reach out to every young girl we see--whether we gave birth to them or not,” Aminah Muhammad said. “We have a responsibility to make sure that we produce whole women for the future and for generations to come.”
Based at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood, Teenshop promotes pregnancy prevention and encourages girls to remain on a positive path, said Muhammad.
“They have a right to be virtuous, faithful, loving, intelligent sisters,” Muhammad said.
Saturday’s program, a fund-raiser, will be held at the Baha’i Center, 5755 Rodeo Road near La Cienega Boulevard. Tickets are $10.
