Alleged Counterfeiter Captured After Chase
A man sought for five years by the Secret Service for suspected counterfeiting was arrested Saturday afternoon after he allegedly passed fake $100 bills at a Circuit City electronics store in Stevenson Ranch, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.
The suspect’s name is being withheld until the Secret Service takes over the investigation today, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Norlemann. Authorities said the suspect had thousands of dollars in counterfeit cash on him and in his van.
Deputies spotted the suspect--driving a beaten-up van with out-of-state plates--leaving the Circuit City parking lot, after store employees had alerted them of the possible counterfeit currency, Norlemann said.
Norlemann said the suspect led deputies on a slow-speed, four-mile chase on two freeways, which ended when he exited the Antelope Valley Freeway onto San Fernando Road, and collided with a car.
The suspect and the other driver were treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. The suspect is being held without bail.
