Sarah Vure, a Boston University doctoral candidate in art history specializing in American art, has been hired as assistant curator at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, effective May 4, officials announced Monday.

The appointment marks the New York native’s first professional curatorial post.

Since 1994 Vure has worked as an intern in the print department of Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum and as a curatorial assistant in prints at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and in American paintings at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

She curated “American Portraits: Colonial to Contemporary, Selected Works From the Collection of the Addison Gallery” at the Addison Gallery of Phillips Academy, a college preparatory school in Andover, Mass.

In the summer of 1990, Vure worked as a curatorial intern at the Laguna Art Museum, said Laguna museum director Bolton Colburn.

“She’s smart and a very good worker,” Colburn said Monday, “and she’s been ripe for a curatorial staff position for a number of years.”

Vure was unavailable Monday for comment.

According to OCMA, Vure has a master’s degree in art history and a certificate in museum studies from Boston University. Spokeswoman Katherine Lee said Vure will “assume responsibility for OCMA’s historical collection and exhibitions and will work closely with chief curator Bruce Guenther.”

In related news at the Newport Beach museum, Charles D. Martin has been reelected to a second one-year term as board chairman, and Gilbert LeVasseur and James V. Selna have been reelected co-vice chairmen.
