Area Sheriff’s Station to Hold Open House

Sheriff’s officials at the Malibu/Lost Hills station will open their doors to the public today, to give residents a peek into their daily lives on the job.

Among the highlights of the open house, the first to be held at the station since 1994, will be an intermittent demonstration of a felony traffic stop, complete with bad guy at the wheel and deputies with their weapons drawn.

“People sometimes see this happening on the roads,” said Officer Shawn Brownell, an event organizer. “We want them to see what we go through, what we’re thinking at the time. And we want people to understand that when that happens, it can be dangerous.”

The station at 27050 Agoura Road will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members of the station’s Arson/Explosives Unit, the Mounted Rescue Team and the Bike & Beach Team are among those scheduled to give demonstrations and exhibits.

Visitors can learn how dogs and horses are used in police work and view the equipment the deputies use, including helicopters, radar and the robots that investigate suspicious packages for bombs.

They can also take a self-guided tour through the station, including the jail.

Los Angeles County Fire Department representatives also will be on hand to show helicopters, urban search and rescue vehicles and engine and paramedic squads. For more information, call (818) 878-1808.
