2 Golf Courses at Park Considered

The county is considering an agreement with a Malibu-based developer to create two golf courses and a clubhouse at Toland Park near Santa Paula.

Crumpler & Kruger Commercial Real Estate Inc., teamed with golf course designer Robert Cupp, has indicated it would invest about $10.3 million to build an 18-hole regulation public golf course and a nine-hole, par 3 course, a county report said.

“The financial strength, vast development experience, financial return to the county annually from golf revenues, and the fact that a well known golf course architect would design the course were the main factors in the recommendation,” county General Services Director Peter Pedroff wrote in the report.

The Board of Supervisors will consider the proposal Tuesday.

By the fifth year of the golf course operation, the county should receive about $600,000 annually from the course lease, the report said.

The developer and designer envision an upscale golf course to draw residents from Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Orange counties on weekends.

To make the golf courses affordable to county residents, the firm’s proposals include reducing green fees for weekday play, creating discount fees for county residents, a reasonably priced par 3 course and a junior golf program for youngsters.
