A Family Matter

At Chaminade High, everything is relative.

At least, that’s the case with the softball team, where six members of the LeCocq family have served in various roles for the Eagles:

* Maureen, a junior, is an All-Southern Section pitcher.

* Ed, Maureen’s father, is the team’s groundskeeper, batting instructor and uniform supplier.

* Mother Mariann is the official scorekeeper and statistician.

* Brother Mike is an assistant coach.

* Sister Michelle is an administrative assistant and sound system manager.

* Grandmother Nettie is perhaps the Eagles’ No. 1 fan.

“I like it,” said Maureen, a right-hander whose record improved to 15-7 Friday as Chaminade clinched the Mission League title with a 1-0 victory over Louisville in nine innings. “I think it’s really nice to have that much support around me.”

Maureen has needed very little support this season.

She enters a Thousand Oaks tournament game against Lakewood today with a 0.09 ERA and has not allowed a run in Mission League play, a span of seven games and 49 innings.

Mike LeCocq is a former Chaminade baseball standout and Michelle starred at Chaminade as a softball catcher. Maureen is the last LeCocq to come through the school.

“I can’t even imagine what things will be like around here when Maureen graduates,” Coach Steve Harrington said. “They are Chaminade.”
