Two workshops have been organized by Pico Rivera city officials to discuss Proposition 227, a June 2 ballot measure that would dismantle most bilingual teaching programs in public schools.
“This initiative has a far-reaching impact on our children and education system,” said Pico Rivera Mayor Garth Gardner. “It is important for parents and relatives of all students to attend this forum.”
Defending the initiative will be Henry Gradillas, former principal of Garfield High School in East Los Angeles.
Opposing the initiative will be Sylvia Argueta and Maribel Medina, lawyers for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
A Spanish-language forum will be held at 7 tonight at North Park Middle School at 4450 S. Durfee Ave.
An English-language forum will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Osburn Burke Middle School at 8101 Orange Ave.
