Orange Coast, Santa Ana Win Conference Titles

Saddleback’s Dan Gaston and Orange Coast’s Zoila Gomez set course records and Santa Ana and Orange Coast won team titles at the Orange Empire Conference cross-country championships Saturday at Riverside College’s Moreno Valley campus.
Gaston won the men’s race in 21 minutes 45 seconds on the four-mile course to help the Gauchos finish fourth.
Santa Ana won the title with 36 points. Alex Reyes (22:06), Lucas Neubauer (22:17) and Roger Elias (22:21) finished third, fourth and fifth for Santa Ana.
Rene Acuna finished second (21:47) for Orange Coast, which finished second with 59 points.
In the women’s race: Orange Coast placed seven runners in the top 10 and finished with 18 points. Gomez won the 3.1-mile race in 19:13. Teammates Berenice Carbajal (20:14) and Penni Proffitt (20:27) were second and third.
Santa Ana’s Sharon Moreno finished fourth in 20:32 to help the Dons finish second with 56 points.
At the California All-Star wrestling match:
South 18, North 13--Nick Bradley, Brian Webster and Dan Maynard of Santa Ana won their matches for the South at Fresno. The South trailed, 13-9, but won the final three matches, including Maynard’s 4-3 victory over Fred Aquitania of Sacramento in the heavyweight division.
Webster defeated Larry Silva of Fresno at 174 pounds, 3-2, and Bradley defeated Kenny Dixon of Santa Rosa, 9-6.
