A Good Idea, or Just Another Case of Greed?

It’s one thing for professional teams to charge personal-seat licensing fees for the privilege of purchasing season tickets.

And now this: Ravenna High School in Ohio is selling PSLs to raise $1 million for the construction of an 8,000-seat stadium. The PSL sale, directed by the school’s alumni association, will range from $1,000 to $1,500 for the right to purchase $30 season tickets for five years.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, PSL owners will get their names engraved on their seats and preferred parking.

No soothsayers: ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, on “College GameDay” Saturday morning, went 0 for 3 when he predicted Ohio State would beat Michigan State, 41-10, Penn State would win big and Mississippi would upset Arkansas. And partner Lee Corso missed badly on UCLA-Oregon State: “Defense will win it for the Bruins.”

Whoa, Nellie: If you didn’t get the pay-per-view telecast of the Michigan-Penn State game, you missed an interesting exchange between Keith Jackson and Bob Griese when the Nittany Lions had a field-goal attempt blocked and Wolverine cornerback Tommy Hendricks picked up the ball.

“‘He’d get two points if he runs it all the way back,” said Jackson, thinking it was an extra-point kick.

Said Griese: “He’d get a touchdown.”

Good thing someone was paying attention.

Racetrack chase: Gregg McCarron, doing post-race interviews on horseback for NBC at the Breeders’ Cup, had trouble getting to Gary Stevens, who was trying to pull up Silverbulletday following the Juvenile Fillies race. While Stevens couldn’t get the horse to stop galloping, McCarron gave new meaning to the term “chasing a story.”

Sharper image: CBS made history Sunday when it showed the Buffalo-New York Jet game on high definition television in the New York City area for those who have shelled out about $7,500 for a high definition set.

Said Marcus Allen about “NFL Today” partner George Seifert: “George is too embarrassed to ask this, but he wonders if he’ll look better on high definition television.”

Nobody cares: An ESPN Chilton poll shows that 62.7% of general sports fans don’t care if the NBA season is canceled and 37.4% of ardent NBA fans don’t care.

Of the NBA fans polled, 46.8% said they will attend fewer games and 25.7% said they would watch fewer on television once the season resumes. Also, 24% support the players, 17% support the owners and 31% support neither.
