U.S. and Baghdad Begin to Square Off

Iraq is reaching out for Arab backing in its refusal to comply with U.N. weapons inspections in hopes of leaving the United States isolated in Washington’s campaign to rally support for the use of force against Baghdad. Iraq’s foreign minister warned on Arab television that “any use of military force against Iraq would lead to destabilizing the region.” In Washington, President Clinton reviewed strategic options, talked with allies and ordered the deployment of the aircraft carrier Enterprise and a group of warships into the region.
