Officer Dies, Dozens Hurt in Protests

In a day of violent protests, troops opened fire with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of chanting, flag-waving student demonstrators trying to march on parliament. The students opposed a special government assembly convened by President B.J. Habibie to map out a new political system for Indonesia. One officer was reported killed, and dozens of people were reported injured in the melee.
