Weinke Has Spinal Surgery

Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke came through nearly four hours of spinal surgery Thursday in excellent shape, and doctors said he should be ready to resume his career next year. The numbness in his fingers disappeared shortly after the operation. . . . The Orange Bowl, scrambling to secure a site for its game Jan. 2, will return to the stadium it abandoned in 1996. The move from Miami’s Pro Player Stadium--for this season only--was made because the Orange Bowl Committee feared a scheduling conflict with the NFL playoffs at Pro Player Stadium, where the Miami Dolphins have first choice of dates.
