Lobos Go Nowhere in Defeat

Lakewood Mayfair put the clamps on Los Amigos’ Andrew Niumata, the county’s leading rusher, and the Monsoons scored five second-half touchdowns to storm past the visiting Lobos, 49-24, in a Southern Section Division IX first-round game Friday night.

Niumata, who finished the regular season with 2,042 yards, gained only 39 in 12 carries. Mayfair running back Michael Williams scored three times, and Darius Hodges added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Monsoons from a 16-12 halftime deficit.

Mayfair (8-3) will play La Verne Bonita (10-1) in the second round. Los Amigos, the second-place representative from the Garden Grove League, finished 7-4.

“They really stepped it up in the second half and we couldn’t go with them,” Los Amigos Coach Roger Takahashi said. “We’re just not deep enough.”

Williams scored on runs of two, 15 and 24 yards, and caught a two-point conversion during Mayfair’s 21-point third quarter.

Los Amigos struggled offensively in the third quarter, and Mayfair got a safety when punter Eddie Perez kicked the ball out the back of his end zone after the ball was snapped over his head.

Mayfair quarterback Mike Harrison cut into Los Amigos’ early 13-0 lead. He threw touchdown passes to Andrew Phillips of 11 and 21 yards to pull to within 16-12.

Los Amigos scored on two of its first four possessions. Quarterback Ao Saulua ran two yards on a bootleg for the first touchdown, and later found Niumata over the middle for a 51-yard score.
