Washington Wins, but Huard Leaving
PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington defeated rival Washington State, 16-9, and qualified for a bowl game on Saturday, but the Huskies are losing quarterback Brock Huard.
The junior announced after a performance in which he was eight for 14 passing for only 84 yards that he will give up his senior season and make himself available for the NFL draft.
“If I’m going to go out, this is the way to do it,” Huard said as he hefted the Apple Cup trophy that goes to the game’s winning team.
The star of the game was freshman running back Willie Hurst, who rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown in 28 carries. It was his second consecutive 100-yard game.
“We’ve been running a lot more north and south, not east and west,” Hurst said of the Huskies’ newfound running game. “We’re trying to go through the tackles, not around them.”
The victory assured Washington, 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Pacific 10 Conference, of its 22nd consecutive winning regular season.
Washington State (3-8, 0-8) ended the season with eight consecutive losses.
