Ferry Runs Between Mexico and Florida
A new company, American Viking Lines, this month began what’s billed as the first scheduled ferry service between the U.S. and Mexico. The Scotia Prince, with cabins for 630 passengers, makes two round trips per week between the company’s home port, Tampa, Fla., and Progreso, on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Progreso is 21 miles from Merida and a four-hour drive from Cancun. The ferry trip takes about 36 hours each way.
Round-trip fares are $144 per person, double occupancy, plus an additional $199 per vehicle. Port charges and meals are extra. There are restaurants on board, as well as a casino. Day trips to Mayan ruins and two- to 12-day sightseeing tours are available at extra cost. Reservations: tel. (800) 450-8633.
