Visiting Marching Bands Competition to Be Held
Five out-of-state bands will march and compete in a free festival at Birmingham High School from 10 a.m. to noon today.
“It is really to showcase the out-of-state bands,” said Michel Papadaki, chairman of Sunday’s Hollywood Christmas Parade, which will feature some of the same bands. “It’s kind of an honor for them.”
The visiting bands will be accompanied by the Santa Monica High School Band on the field at Birmingham High, 17000 Haynes St., Van Nuys. A panel of judges will select the top musical groups for best music, marching, manner and other award categories.
The festival bands will join 10 other bands, primarily from California, at the annual Hollywood holiday parade from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
The parade will travel a 3 1/2-mile route from Paramount Pictures on Melrose Avenue west to Vine Street, north to Sunset Boulevard, west to Highland Avenue, north to Hollywood Boulevard and east to Gower Street.
