Santa Ana, Cypress Are Shooting for State Soccer Titles
The Santa Ana men’s soccer team and the Cypress women’s team are next up in Orange County’s quest for more state titles.
Tomas Serna, a forward from Saddleback High, leads Santa Ana (20-1-3) into the state tournament at DeAnza College in Cupertino.
Serna has scored 29 goals this season, seven behind the single-season mark set by Jose Vasquez, now an assistant coach at Santa Ana.
The Dons, who last won a state title in 1995, open against DeAnza (19-3-1) at 11 a.m. today. Santa Barbara (19-2-2) plays West Valley (19-1-3) at 2 p.m. in the other match.
Cypress is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the state tournament and fifth in eight seasons. The Chargers have yet to win a title.
The Chargers (23-0-1) open today with Ohlone (20-2-1) at 11 a.m. at West Valley College in Saratoga. This is a rematch of last’s year semifinal game won by Ohlone, 2-1.
El Camino (17-1-2) plays Santa Rosa (18-0-1) at 2 p.m. in the other semifinal. The women’s final is at 11 a.m. Sunday at West Valley, followed by the men’s game at 2.
