Personal Integrity Still Does Exist

I enjoyed Scott Martelle’s thoughtful article (“On My Dishonor,” Nov. 11), but I disagree that President Clinton merely “reflects” a decline in our respect for integrity as a positive virtue.
Mr. Martelle says integrity is still alive and well in business, with which I totally agree. Business could not function without integrity. I am in the lending business, and if we even catch a whiff that integrity might be lacking in a prospective borrower, we won’t do the deal. I was editor of our 850-member association newsletter, and I ran a survey of lending criteria. Guess what? Integrity was No. 1.
We would never lend a nickel to Mr. Clinton.
I believe that integrity still governs human affairs in general. Liars are shunned everywhere. They especially don’t like one another. This is true on the golf course and in social gatherings. Everywhere.
Integrity has not been helped by bad examples set in high places, but it is far from dead. I believe it will be the main issue in the next election.
