No. 1 Golden West Sweeps Ventura in Under an Hour

Golden West, the top-ranked women’s volleyball team in the state, needed only 59 minutes to beat visiting Ventura in a Southern California playoff match Saturday in Huntington Beach.

The Rustlers won, 15-1, 15-5, 15-5, to advance to the state tournament for the 11th consecutive year. Golden West, which improved its postseason winning streak to 34, has won the last five state titles.

Laurel Kokaska, a sophomore outside hitter who was the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, had 12 kills and Kui Fletcher and Meghan Coolbaugh added nine kills each and Charnette Fair had eight for the Rustlers (23-0).

Ventura, which had only one kill in the first game, finishes 12-6.

Golden West plays San Joaquin Delta at 8 p.m. Friday in the first round of the state tournament in Visalia.

In another Southern California playoff match:

Saddleback 3, Cuesta 0--Kelly Webb and Gina Stivers had 13 kills each as host Saddleback won, 15-6, 15-3, 15-9, to advance to the state tournament for a second consecutive year.

Saddleback opens with Foothill (16-0) at 6 p.m. Friday in the state tournament.

In the Cypress women’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 76, Long Beach City 62--Angela Garrett scored nine of her 30 points during a 15-2 scoring run that broke a 50-50 tie with nine minutes remaining in a semifinal game.

Sharee Brown added 23 points for Cypress (3-4).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Orange Coast 81, Victor Valley 51--Sarah Middlebrooke had 14 points and eight rebounds for host OCC (6-0), which shot 46% from the field in the first half to take a 24-point lead.

In the Citrus tournament:

Riverside 84, Santa Ana 79--Chris Mattice made 14 of 16 free throws and finished with a game-high 31 points for Santa Ana (4-2) in the title game.
