Agenda Also Includes Some History

The Bruins return to practice today after the four-day holiday break courtesy of last week’s bye, still on a path for the Fiesta Bowl with a victory Saturday at Miami and on path for several historical achievements.

Including:

* No UCLA team has won 11 games. This group is 10-0 with two chances remaining.

* Danny Farmer has 997 receiving yards, meaning only an injury will keep him from becoming the fourth Bruin to reach 1,000. Kevin Jordan (1,228 in 1994), J.J. Stokes (1,181 in ‘93) and Sean LaChapelle (1,056 in ‘91) are the others.

* DeShaun Foster needs 67 yards to pass Shawn Wills and set the school single-season rushing mark for a true freshman. Wills had 622 in 1988 and Foster is at 556. Foster could also become the first true freshman to lead the Bruins in rushing since Skip Hicks in 1993.

The Bruins are already only the fourth team in Pacific 10 history to win eight conference games in a season, joining USC ‘88, Washington ’91 and Arizona ’96. And the Rose Bowl crowd of 88,080 for win No. 8 in a row over the Trojans set a UCLA attendance record, at 73,709 a game, and put it atop the Pac-10 for the first time.

Coach Bob Toledo has praised his 16-member senior class as his best such group at UCLA. “Very unselfish, very team oriented,” he said. “They work hard and never complain, at least to me. They know what’s at stake.” . . . The last time the Bruins prepared to head to Miami, calling off the trip because of Hurricane Georges just before departing campus, it was on a Thursday, an attempt to get them to Florida a day early to better adjust to the time change that was a factor because kickoff was set for 9 a.m. in Los Angeles. But this time, trying to spend as much time in town as one of the compromises for rescheduling the game, they leave on Friday, with an 11 a.m. PST kickoff.
